Producers of the new Muppets series, aired on Sky1 this evening, have confirmed that Kermit the Frog will be killed off at some point in the series in a bid to address gun violence in the US.
The decision has been met with the approval of Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and Barack Obama.
The Muppets producer, Ed Stone, said: “The decision to kill off Kermit wasn’t easy, but something needs to be done about gun violence in the US. It’s so bad now that it’s become a topic of everyday banter. It shouldn’t be that way.
“There are 13 episodes in the new series and Kermit is destined to meet his maker in one of them, but we can’t disclose which one it will be. The viewers won’t see it coming, that’s for sure. That’s how it is with gun violence.
“To be honest, it’s not such a bad thing putting the poor sod out of his misery because he’s never really gotten over Miss Piggy. It’s the best thing that could happen to him in the long run.”
Speaking at the Annual Porcine Banquet in Springfield, Oregon, US president, Barack Obama said: “it’s impossible to say who’s going to be the next victim of gun violence in this country. That’s a fact.
“Hopefully the sight of one of our best loved icons having his brains blown out will wake the nation up. If it doesn’t, nothing will.”
